چکیده

We used the Plateau de Bure Interferometer to observe λ3mm J=1-0 absorption lines of HCO + , HCN and CO toward the core of the nearby elliptical, megamaser-host galaxy NGC1052. The lines are relatively weak, with peak optical depths 0.03 for HCO + and HCN and 0.1 for CO. Nonetheless the inferred column density of molecular gas 2N(H2) ≃ 5×10 21 cm −2 is consistent with the degree of reddening inferred toward the nucleus from observations of the Balmer series of hydrogen. Mm-wave absorption line profiles are somewhat broader than those of H I and OH, perhaps because lower free-free opacity at mm-wavelengths exposes higher-velocity material nearer the nucleus. Overall, the OH/HCO + ratio in NGC1052 is as expected from the strong relationship established in local diffuse clouds but the optical depth ratio varies strongly over the line profiles. Similar variations are also seen toward Cen A, which has very different line ratios among H I, OH and HCO + for very nearly the same amount of OH absorption.

Prevalence of compact nuclear starbursts in nearby Seyfert galaxies

We present an imaging survey of the CO(1–0), HCN(1–0), and HCO(1–0) lines in the nearby Seyfert galaxies using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and RAINBOW Interferometer. Some of the observed Seyfert galaxies including NGC 1068, NGC 1097, NGC 5033, and NGC 5194 exhibit strong HCN(1–0) emission on a few 100 pc scales. The observed HCN(1–0)/CO(1–0) and HCN(1–0)/HCO(1–0) line ratios in the Seyfert n...

Dense Molecular Gas and Star Formation in Nearby Seyfert Galaxies

Abstract. An imaging survey of CO(1−0), HCN(1−0), and HCO(1−0) lines in the centers of nearby Seyfert galaxies has been conducted using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the RAINBOW interferometer. Preliminary results reveal that 3 Seyferts out of 7 show abnormally high HCN/CO and HCN/HCO ratios, which cannot occur even in nuclear starburst galaxies. We suggest that the enhanced HCN emission or...

Molecular emission from the diffuse gas around ζ Ophiuchi

Wehavemappedλ18cmOH andλ9cmCH emission from the diffuse gas around ζ Oph, and find no trace of emission from the +4.5 km s−1 gas whose OH line was previously believed to represent pre-shock gas. The pattern of OH emission is strikingly dissimilar to those of CO, HCO+ and CH in that the strong +1 km s−1 component seen to the South is largely absent in OH. CH more closely resembles CO, peaking on...

High spatial resolution observations of the CO(1–0), HCN(1–0), HCO(1–0), and CO(1–0) molecular lines toward the luminous infrared merger NGC 6240 have been performed using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the RAINBOW Interferometer. All of the observed molecular emission lines are concentrated in the region between the double nuclei of the galaxy. However, the distributions of both HCN and HCO...

Vibrationally Excited Hcn in the Luminous Infrared Galaxy Ngc 4418

Infrared pumping and its effect on the excitation of HCN molecules can be important when using rotational lines of HCN to probe dense molecular gas in galaxy nuclei. We report the first extragalactic detection of (sub)millimeter rotational lines of vibrationally excited HCN, in the dust-enshrouded nucleus of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 4418. We estimate the excitation temperature of Tvib ≈...
